| Blenders... |
[10 Jul 2009|09:24am] |
This is probably really random, but I'm a college student and I have luxury of bringing a blender (it's the magic bullet haha) with me to school in the fall. I've never really used a blender for anything before but because I can bring one I'd like to have some healthy recipes in mind before I head off. I don't have any food allergies and I'm pretty open to anything, but I really don't like eggs (in batters and whatnot, they're fine, but I don't like them prepared on their own). Other than that I'm really open to making fruit juices/smoothies/etc. I'm open to any and all suggestions but just bear in mind I'm on a college budget and I have a fairly small fridge to store stuff in.
Thank you!!!

Its the End of the World! |
] |
So I'm in a very good mood. After a week of vacationing and eating pretty much whatever the h*ll I wanted (ginormous cookies that were delicious from Disneyworld, pastries from Panera Bread, etc) I've finally gotten back on track today. I was vacationing in Florida up until yesterday night.
Today, I woke up and actually went for a 1 mile run followed by a 1 mile walk. After that I did weight reps for my legs (squats and stuff) and then for arms. Exercising leaves me less hungry, so afterwards I ended up cleaning out my bag from my trip and didn't eat breakfast until it was almost lunch time! Breakfast was basically Cheerios with strawberries mixed in, a half-a-banana and a glass of milk. Yum! And then, because I ate a late breakfast I didn't eat lunch till almost 3 pm. For lunch I had a salad with only a little fat free dressing, and I had a ham sandwich with lettuce, tomatos, peppers, half a slice of muenster cheese on gooood, day-old bread from my favorite sub shop. It was only about a half a sandwich though. And then, later on in the day I went for a 2.5 - 3 mile bike ride followed by a 1 mile walk again. For dinner which was actually at a regular time, I had some ravioli sans sauce with a slice of bread and a salad again. But guess what? No pastries, desserts, chocolate or anything unhealthy for me today! For snackage I had a popsicle and a little bit of that day-old bread (its wheat too, and it really wasn't that much). 8D
So that's a little bit healthier than eating chocolate-covered gram crackers from Starbucks, or splitting a chocolate muffin with my friend, or eating a chocolate pastry from Disneyworld eh? hahahah. But it was alright, I was on vacation! Its surprising though, but I was actually eager to get back to my healthful eating. I was getting sick of all that food. lol. Even though I gained like 2 lbs .. o.o;
Ah well, my grad party's Sunday but other than that I'll be eating well for the next two days, and then next week of course.

Hello everyone!
Was just musing my thoughts on exercising whilst listening to music and was wondering if anyone has any particular songs or artists that they think motivate them whilst exercising?
Apologies for the short post, but I'm off to a class at my gym [hurrah!]
I hope everyone's week is going well :)

| Dairy and Soda (separate issues) |

Okay, it's late here and I am dog-tired, but I thought I'd better post this up whilst I remember.
I've always been a pretty big fan of dairy products, but lately (as in, the past year or so) I seem to be developing a slight intolerance. It's not major enough for me to require it to be cut out completely, but I definitely need to cut down. My question is, how should I go about this? I've done trial runs where I've had no dairy at all, just to check that's what it is, but I'm reluctant to totally eliminate it from my diet as it's such a big part of it, I worry about my calcium intake and I'm underweight as it is. Does anyone have any tips for a self-confessed dairy fiend to help cut it down or replace it?
Another thing, I remember reading someone had managed to cut out soda for a few days. This is something I really need to do - I have a pretty bad caffeine problem and since I've always had low blood sugar and dealt with it badly, I've always had fizzy drinks. So if anyone has any tips on how to kick that habit, I'd really appreciate it - I've tried before but nothing seems to kill the thirsty ache like coca-cola does for me!
Sorry if this post is a little backwards, but it's way past my bedtime :3

So I had to work early today, after having 3 days off, AND I woke up late. Despite REALLY not wanting to go to the gym, and having the excuse of limited time, I dragged my butt there. Put in 20 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weight training. Lately I've been doing an hour worth of cardio, so this really was just a quick work out-- but better to have done a quicky then to have not gone at all!

About the only good thing I can say about wisdom tooth recovery is that I'm at my calorie per week goals because I'm a) too tired to eat any more than that, and b) got bored of "soft, cold foods" by the end of day one. I never would have thought I could get bored of ice cream and pudding! I've been eating cold vegetable soups, which are... well edible. But not awesome. Apparently I really like texture in my food!
I miss exercising, too, which surprises and pleases me.
I'm having fibromyalgia complications from the post-op; the swelling triggers flareups and increases overall pain. On the other hand my surgeon was very competent so the overall swelling and pain is far lower than it could have been. I'm not having much jaw pain or muscle pain from having my mouth jacked open. No bruising at all, and everything seems to be healing nice and fast. (So glad I didn't have to be awake for the procedure.) This is a huge relief since in general I've seemed to heal very slowly from any injuries since my autoimmunes kicked off, and I was worried about that happening here.
Not a very "healthy start" week for me but from a big picture perspective I'm doing all the right things and not compromising my overall healing even though I have to sideline exercise and eating yummy crunchy vegetables. I'm hoping I can start walking at least this weekend, maybe some yoga. I'll play it by ear and see what my body says; it's still waking up from the anaesthesia even though it's been days!

Thanks to everyone who replied to my previous post :)
Well, I went out with my future mother-in-law and we went to a Farmers Market (SCORE!!) and I got a bunch of fruit and greens and EVOO :)
I do admit I ate a little crappy today :/ the 2 nutrigrain bars bc i was in a rush this morning, a honey bran raisin muffin, reg coffee with skim milk and sweet 'n low, 2 grilled cheese sandwiches, a bunch of pickles, hamburger helper, and salad with spring mix, snap peas, tomato slices, and a drizzling of EVOO :) so I ended the day on a good note (again SCORE!)
Tomorrow morning, I'll have Total cereal with skim milk and a small mix of blueberries, strawberries, and currants :P yummmm (um question, should I wash all the stuff I bought from the market?)
And tomorrow afternoon I plan on going for a jog and doing my weights.. OH and my boyfriend and I are getting a dog!! someone to get out of the house with and hike and stuff since my bf works so much :)
The way I look at it now, this is a process :) I'm learning <333

| Progress |
[09 Jul 2009|02:56pm] |
Hey guys; I posted back on 6/24 that I was starting my (second) weight loss journey in my life time. At that point I'd lost 12 pounds; as of this morning, I'm down 16 pounds!! I feel so thrilled that I'm able to do this on my own, through proper nutrition and exercise.
This week, my personal goal was to work out [at least] a half an hour every day, Monday-Friday (who knows if I'll stop at the weekend - might just keep on trucking!) Today being Thursday, I have been able to do this for the past four days! It's becoming a part of who I am, which is completely new to me.
I mostly have been walking; I'm kind of hacked because NOW, when I finally decide I like using our weight room, they're renovating it. So I guess that's a double edged sword - we'll get nicer stuff when they put it back together. It's supposed to be happening around August 4th - I'm so stoked. I'd been really enjoying the eliptical and some of the weight machine stuff.
Last time, I did most of my weight loss through calorie restriction (Weight Watchers), and not a lot of exercise. I am sure that I thought I was doing amazing if I worked out two times a week back then. In my last post I talked about how this time I didn't want to lose the weight only through calorie restriction - I wanted to be strong.
I think I'm getting there.
I would love to have some new girlfriends (or guy friends!) on my LJ who are working on some major weight loss like I am. It'd be awesome to have a close support system with someone who understands.

Today's food choices were a little sucky. I always overeat when my sinuses back up. Vicious circle thing. Actually, I made decent choices, but the quantities weren't that good. Had organic cheerios for breakfast -- sans milk, I don't like milk on my cereal -- lunch was one of those lean cuisines -- fish with pasta and veggies -- snack was cottage cheese and peaches. I snacked a little heavy on the cashews. Mostly 'cause the meds to keep the sinus migrane from leaking out of my ears make me sleepy, so I munch to stay awake. Like I said, vicious cycle thing.
I did have my can of soda in the morning, and a propel lemonade for lunch.
Dinner was a whole nother kettle of fish. It finally got warm here in northern maine which means my "house" was rather stuffy. So I didn't want to cook. So I go into the garden and snip some fresh salad greens, put a small can (the same size as the cans of cat food) of tuna (in water that I drained) on the greens, then sliced an apple to go around the edge and washed that down with water fresh from the well (we have outstanding water here). Is that better? Oh, I added some random dried italian seasonings to perk it up, the tuna wasn't that high of a grade. :P

I'm new to this community. Just thought I'd introduce myself. I was away from Spark People for like a week or so and was starting to really eat poorly again. So I'm back on it today. And really glad to be. That is such a great site for tracking food and workouts...I just have to keep the freakin' motivation going for longer than a week! Ugh. It's tough. But I'm really tired of feeling gross and bad about my body and myself.
Frustrated. I need to just force myself to start working out again. Need to feel better.
Well, glad to find a group of people on LJ that are talking about these things! :)

Help; I need me some Will Power! I'm feeling hungry today!
Have eaten sensibly so far, but there is a whole lot of the day left. For exercise, I did a 3 mile walk during my lunchbreak time (pant- in 90 degree weather).
breakfast(7 am): protein bar, fresh strawberries. snack (10:15 am): multigrain english muffin. lunch (11:45 am): SmartOnes anglehair pasta entree with extra veggies. have some more strawberries for an afternoon snack, and grilled fish and veggies planned for dinner.
But, what do I have to do this evening? Why, bake a cake! LOL..what's wrong with THIS picture? My hobby-business is baking and decorating custom cakes! Is it possible to have one's cake and NOT eat it too? Is it possible to be a sugar-baker and have food issues and stay healthy? I know, there are lots of non-caloric hobbies, but I like playing "ace of cakes".
Groan...how am I going to get through this? How am I going to find the pleasure in cake creation but not give in to cravings? (*Shrug* Sometimes I can bake and be fine and other times, well, it ends up as an excuse for a binge.)
Be sure to take the time to eat and enjoy my dinner before starting baking. Maybe get myself a 2 liter of diet soda to sip on. Wear latex gloves while baking (it's more sanitary AND, somehow, it makes me less likely to lick my fingers). Hell, maybe an anti-germ face mask too...

So far over the summer, I've been trying to steer myself away from junk food because that seems to be my biggest problem. My mom bought me some granola stuff that I thought was going to taste like crap, but it didn't! It actually tastes so good! It's called Bear Naked all natural granola. I know they make a lot of different kinds, but I have the Fruit and Nut kind. In it there is; whole grain oats, wildflower honey, almonds, raisins, cranberries, coconut, walnuts, pecans, maple syrup, oat bran, and sesame seeds. I recommend this to anyone else who's trying to limit fatty food in their diet. It's good for a breakfast on the run or a good afternoon snack. It really fills you up with 6 grams of protein and fiber and 140 calories in a snack pouch. You should really try it! :D

[09 Jul 2009|08:36am] |
First of all I leave for holidays tomorrow, so I'll be MIA for just over a week. My plan is to maintain not gain and if I lose great, if not, then that's okay. 227.2 is my current weight, so here is to maintaining :)
ALSO, so I work in reception/IT coordination. So a customer comes in this morning to pick up a printer, and the first thing she says was "wow, you've been losing weight" - kind of awkward, but totally made my morning. I'm just going to grin inside now.

I got in a great work out this morning. Yoga, running, weight lifting, push ups:)
I ate a bananna, yogurt and a pear for breakfast and am sipping on a decaf soy latte. I have a tuna avocado sandwich for lunch, with an orange and a piece of string cheese. Dinner is apricot chicken:)
I feel healthy:) Just wanted to share.

Morning all!
My friend and I were talking last night...she's on a very strict weight loss plan with the goal of losing enough weight to undergo a breast reduction.
Anyhow, since I've been eating clean (two weeks or so), I've lost five pounds. She's lost 10 pounds. We were talking about how little we exercise, and she mentioned that her doctor indicated that 85% of weight loss is linked to our diet, versus exercise.
Has anyone heard this before? I was just wanting to confirm whether this is true? Obviously I know exercise is integral to healthy living as well, but 85% linked to diet seems like a staggering number!

Oh my gosh, guys, I went waaaaay over my maintenance calorie allowance today!
For a SNACK, I had:
- A banana slathered in peanut butter (one of my biggest weaknesses!) - About half a cup of ice cream - Several crackers with goats cheese (<-- if you haven't tried this, you must. I thought it would taste just as gross as goat milk, but it's really quite tasty and crumbles like feta cheese - great for salads and soups and so on.) - An apple - A handful of All-Bran Buds
I don't really want to know what that adds up to! xD But tomorrow I'll cut back again, and go to my spin class and BodyCombat. I'm just glad I'm not as paranoid and obsessive as I was in the past to the point where I would actually consider eating the grand total of one orange the day after a bit of excessive eating.
I also thought I would share with everyone a really nice online store I fell in love with the minute I saw the clothes they sell: http://www.modcloth.com/. They specialize in "indie, retro, and vintage apparel, accessories, shoes, and decor from independent designers and artists." I've never been much of a dress-wearer, partly because: can you sit with your legs spread open with a skirt on?, and partly because I've never liked myself in them. But I am just dying to buy their "Golden Days of Glamour" dress. Would it look good on someone who's 5'1, dya think? :D
Here are some of their most popular dresses (they sell lots more, too!) for those who want to check out the style before they decide to go to the site:

I lost 1.6 lbs. since last Tuesday. Not a lot, but it really has made me smile all day because I'm seeing progress. My two gym coaches are really awesome and inspiring too. They motivate me so much and they've been saying that can tell I've slimmed down. Tomorrow is my last day of gym, but luckily I have discovered that the weight room at school will be open for the rest of July, so that really makes me happy because I'll still have my coaches to hang onto for a little longer to help motivate me. After July, I think I'm going to have my mom sign us up for a YMCA membership so I can continue weight training. There is a universal weight machine in my basement, but it's really limited and various pieces are missing. Basically, all it can help with are my arms and abs because the part for leg extensions and hamstrings isn't hooked up..even if we have the cord.
...yeah. lol.
